With inflammation comes the receding, swelling and bleeding of the gums.

Gingivitis - The leading cause of bleeding gums. The gum disease gingivitis is caused by plaque build-up on the teeth and under the gums.
Malnutrition - Malnutrition can cause bleeding gums because the body lacks all the vitamins necessary to keep the gums healthy and to keep foreign bacteria in the mouth at bay. In particular, Vitamin C and Vitamin K play a key role in oral health.
Infection - If you have an infected tooth or gum line, bleeding can persist. Loose teeth due to infection or severe cavities can cause bleeding gums as well.
Improperly fitted oral hardware - Dentures, braces and retainers that are not fitted properly can irritate the gums, causing inflammation or bleeding. If you wear braces or dentures, it is important to make sure they are fitted properly.
Platelet disorder - Platelets, or thrombocytes, are cells that reside in the bloodstream and are the key cells involved in blood clotting. When your platelets are not working properly, any injury can cause severe bleeding that does not stop. Platelet disorders can cause gums to bleed incessantly.
Medication - If you use certain medications, such as blood thinners, bleeding gums can be a problem. Ask your physician about the side effects of the medication you take.
Leukemia - Leukemia, and extreme case, also causes bleeding gums.
Brushing/Flossing - Brushing and flossing are excellent daily hygiene routines, but brushing or flossing too hard can cause your gums to bleed.
